Twitter Downfalls

Twitter is by far my favorite social networking tool. It’s easy to find tweeps with similar interests as well as keeping in touch with the world.

However, there are a few downfalls.

  1. Unprotected accounts can be seen by anyone and everyone (including family and employers).
  2. Protected accounts, if you’re a blogger or have a business, you can only reach those who you allow to see your tweets.
  3. Those chronic whiney tweeps. Ugh, how annoying!
  4. Those damn sex bots who continue to follow you!
  5. Limited to 140 characters

But, that’s ok. Most of those I can deal with however, let’s look at #3. Those chronic whiney tweeps that are always complaining about their health, whining about their life (ie., kids, lack of money, spouse, significant other), or the ones crying out “Listen to me”!

Now I’m guilty of tweeting a rant or two tweet. I’m human. I get pissed off. I want to let it out. I tweet it! But I have followed some folks that are chronic and to be honest, it’s a MAJOR downer! I’ve been weeding out negativity out of my real-time life and definitely don’t want it in my social networking life.

Unfortunately, you either put up with those kind of tweets or your UNFOLLOW the person. This is where it get’s a tad sticky. Some tweeps probably could care less if you unfollow them or not. But then there are those. The ones that will find a way to send you messages asking why you UNFOLLOWED them and then tweet bad things about you in twitter-land. No biggy, right? Eh, just shake it off. :)

That’s the way I see it. Once again, YOU have a CHOICE who you want in your social networking life. If someone is an asshat and you don’t like it, UNFOLLOW em. If they are persistent in being an asshat, BLOCK em! Unfortunately, if you have an UNPROTECTED account, again, anyone can read your tweets…..even if they haven’t official FOLLOWED you.

So there’s not much you can do about that, except PROTECT your tweets. If you’re like me, you want to reach ALL of Twitter, not just a select few that you allow to Follow you. So, just suck it up! Continue on with your life and smile knowing that someone or several someone’s think about you that much that they will “sneak” to read your Twitter feed! :)

I know a lot of you are on Twitter, so I’d like to know What other downfalls have you found on Twitter? Have you had “issues” with Tweeps and or “sneaks” reading your TL?

  1. Hi Brenda,

Sorry I don’t allow ‘em in my space :D I just fight back with each of ‘em and mark as spam right after. If they are not spamming they will not get banned but reviewed by Twitter official fellows. It’s better than just blocking and unfollowing I guess. However I always believe if I go with something online, still I’m unprotected :) So no worries. Hackers and Twitter officials can read it if they want.

    Cheers…

  2. Wow, I have not experienced those Brenda, DM you to ask why you unfollowed? That’s quite bold. I think once in a while to be a downer is okay, it shows we are human. We can’t be happy 100% of the time though we may try – I know I do :)
If they are blatantly spam I will mark as spam too like Mayura. I try to give them another chance but if it’s an egg head with viruses it’s all over.

    • Not on a dm, but they find me on my blog, fb page, or g+ to ask. Crazy eh? I haven’t had “those” kind in awhile though. Guess I learned how to choose my followers. :)

  3. 1. I don’t want just anyone seeing my TL I need to know who is reading what I am writing. I know a lot of people from my past life and I don’t want that life in my life now.
    2. It’s hard to reach more with my protected account but I don’t let that stop me I comment on other blogs a lot and I am a part of different groups on facebook so people see my blog besides when you click my name you can easily see my link for my blog and judge from there whether you want to follow me or not.
    3. Some people do whine but who doesn’t I know I do if it’s a bit too much then I hide their TL from my phone.
    4. the sex bots are ridiculous I don’t get hardly any spam with my blocked account but for my magazine good gawd
    5. If I have a lot to say I save it for facebook or my blog it’s a challenge with 140 characters but I make it work….sometimes

    • Thanks Kita. For some reason I do attract a lot of whiners. I mean, everyone does have problems, financial, health and what not but to do tweet after tweet after tweet? Get a blog! Know what I mean? I guess I shouldn’t judge but for someone like myself who is trying desperately to keep the negative out of my life, it’s hard to do with chronic whiners. I’d rather have the sex bots than them. :)

  4. i just don’t like those that harass me to follow back. i mean seriously. i really only do follow people after looking at their timeline and those i like i follow. if you’re going to follow me for a follow back, dont bother following. eh you find weirdos everywhere girl. lol

    • Oh yeah, I forgot about those! And the ones who follow you, then follow up with a DM promoting something of theirs. OR the ones who follow you yet have a protected account and won’t approve your follow back? Eeek!

  5. This is one of the reasons I don’t do Twitter as much as I should, but I’m going to do better. The sex bots annoy me to no end. I didn’t make my account private, but sometimes I wish I did. I also followed a few people that do that team follow, I unfollowed them very quickly. I’m very careful who I follow now, and I plan to use it more now. I basically want to follow other bloggers and companies that I can get important info from..and a few family and friends.

    • Good deal Whitney, btw, I am following you! ;) I like to follow those with similar interests and bloggers. Sometimes the blogs I love to read, have idiots on twitter and I quickly unfollow. The bots aren’t as bad as they used to be but those “teamfollowback” ones, Ewww!!! BLOCK! Then you have some real crazy kind of folks and I give them the boot too, however I remain unprotected simply because I like to promote my blog as well as others and I like to meet others with similar interests by using # hashtags. Thanks for sharing sweetie!

  6. Every social network has its own downfalls, right Brenda?

Twitter is a good one, so I can bare with the whiners (but, I don’t these days, I have a short list of people I follow – and all of them are real bloggers who don’t whine at that, they share, they care).

But, oh yes, I still have the others – bot accounts sending me url mentions (Hate those!).

As with 140 characters, I love it and I hate (I love it because it requires some effort to craft a wonderful message using 140 characters or less, I hate it because it is too short :D ).

    • You’re absolutely right, Jeevan!

My fav is twitter though. I just need to quit being nice and keeping those who irritate me because I’m afraid of hurting their feelings. I use twitter (while at work… shhhh) because it’s an escape plus makes me feel less isolated (I work in a two person office).

Keeps me connected with the real world, know what I mean?

The 140 characters can be a downfall and I guess it I have to tweet more then 500 characters, I better darn well be putting it on my blog! :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  7. I have a love/hate relationship with Twitter too. But then again, I do with all social networking lol!

  8. I hope I’m not one of those whiny ones you mentioned!
There is actually a service called Qwitter, I think, that will email you when someone unfollows! Thanks to that stupid service, I have gotten a few messages and I just tell them the truth. “You have no original tweets. It’s all RTs.” or “Your constant gushing about your bf turns my stomach.” or “You’re not funny. That’s just wrong.”
*shrugs* The whiniest people are on my facebook page. They’re family so I can’t delete them without some kind of backlash, but I have been known to delete them from my news feed so I don’t have to see any of their ridiculous stuff :)

    • Nah, not you! :) Some things I really don’t want to hear about, ya know. “Oh, I’m so depressed and no one will tweet me.” Really? I understand you have depression however, there are helplines and such. I guess I’m being ignorant but I truly hate seeing so many negative things in my TL. Everyone is guilty of a rant or two but all the time? Eeekk!

      • I hear that! I followed people that only rant about their parents. Sure I have a jab or two at my in-laws expense, but seriously.. If you’re that upset about life, go seek enlightenment or a self-esteem workshop. People can see right through an attention seeker and it’s unfollow all the way!
Tina recently posted…I Think This Is The Beginning…My Profile

        • You’re absolutely right Tina. It’s sad that people do seek attention that way and in forms of p.o.r.n or provacativeness. Sad.

Woof at us ;) !
