How Far Would You Go?

Scenario:  It’s the middle of the night. You, your family, and your dog are tucked in for the night and fast asleep. You hear glass break. Before you know it, someone is standing in your bedroom doorway pointing a gun your way. What do you do?

{{{ }}}

This often goes through my mind, especially due to the abundance of shootings that have happened recently, the decline of the economy, and people getting more desperate. I’ve also  seen an abundance of tweets and Facebook posts about the “Right to Bear Arms”.  You may find this post a tad controversial so please let me refer you to my site Disclaimer.

So back to my scenario. What do you do? How far would you go to protect your family? Do you just let this intruder take whatever he/she wants and harm your family?

There are so many people who are anti-guns. They feel we, human beings, do not deserve the right to bear arms. That guns are evil and should not be allowed in the general public’s hands.

Then there are those, like myself, who embrace the right to bear arms. Will protect what is theirs (family) until the death.

There are also those who truly should not have their hands on a gun but somehow do get them and that’s when tragedies happen.

So, what are you going to do in the event of an intruder? Someone is out to harm you, your family, and take what is yours!

Me? I embrace my right to bear arms, grab my gun, and PROTECT! Yes, I will not apologize if that offends you. I believe to protect my family. Someone has intruded into my home with intent to harm me and/or my family. I can not let this happen.

A while back we had a little scare in my neighborhood. I have aluminum baseball bats place strategically in separate rooms in my home. Why? Easy access if I can’t get to my gun. May seem a tad paranoid but I’d rather not be a statistic.

I often think of getting my permit to carry. With shootings happening outside of the home, one can not be prepared enough. I think about all those people in that movie theatre with no escape! How terrifying and tragic! I don’t want to be a victim!

Maybe someday I’ll pursue that.

Mind you, I don’t believe guns should be in the wrong hands. I believe, those who own should have to complete some sort of target practice training and possibly get recertified every year. However, this is only going to help those who legally own guns.

People say guns should be outlawed. This isn’t going to help anything because then you are going to have more crime because people will be getting guns illegally. Killing one another to get a gun.

I don’t know what the solution is to who can have or can not have guns, but I will say, again, I embrace my right to bear arms and am willing and able to protect what is mine.

You can read more about my defense weapon here, Sig Sauer Mosquito.

Now I ask you, How Far Would You Go to Protect What is Yours? If you own, do you know how to use it? Are you willing and able to use it?

  1. I don’t own one but I believe in our constitution and the right to own one. I don’t think changing the constitution would change it, It’s like drugs, has it stopped people from taking illegal drugs? Or prohibition, did they stop drinking alcohol?
Not sure what the solution is but it’s very sad having all these shootings in this country..

    • Thank you Lisa. I do agree on changing part of the law. I don’t believe we need to have high powered machine guns in our homes for defense, but don’t take away our shot guns that we use for hunting and our hand guns that we use for defense. There are people who believe taking all rights away will change. I disagree. I believe it will cause mass hysteria and will start a revolution. I hope to never see that.

It is truly sad to see so many people taking lives into their own hands. But I have to ask why? Some some they are “possessed by the devil”. I laugh at that and call BS. I believe, part of it is due to our economy, with so many hardships and people out of jobs, they have no where else to turn and decided to just wreak havoc. Then there are those who have chemical imbalances and are just “not in touch” with reality. Truly sad.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts my friend. :)

  2. Guns don’t go off by themselves so people kill I think owning one is a good thing I just worry about some of the people who own them.

    • You’re right Kita and I do agree about those who own them, however, how do you screen for buying a gun? Apparently, are current methods are failing to some extent. And then again, if those trying to buy, are denied, they will find other ways (i.e., EBay, Craigslist, stealing, etc.) It’s truly sad

My hub is ex-military-collects guns. Took 16 to the shooting range so she could learn correctly how to use it. I don’t love them but I feel safe that he is so anal about having them around. FYI my cousin is a horse vet in North Florida and HAS to carry one in her truck as she is travelling around late at nite in the country on calls.

    • Hi Maryanne! Wait, 16? Oh my gosh! :) I don’t love them either but I’m not afraid to use them when necessary. In my single days, I used to sport a stun gun in my cowgirl boots, and yes, I’ve had to use it! That’s a shame about your cousin but better to be safe, than sorry, right? :) Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Thanks for this post Brenda. I would find it amusing that the very people who scream bloody murder about their 1st amendment or their 4th amend rights etc, so causally try to deny others their 2nd amend rights…Except that the anti-gun lobby has grown so powerful. There are millions of responsible, law abiding gun owners in this country who should not be punished for the actions of psychopaths and criminals. If guns were banned completely things would only get worse because criminals and psychopaths will still be able to get guns on the black market and would not be deterred from using them by the chance they may encounter someone legally in possession of a gun. The City of Chicago has banned guns entirely and their murder rate increased by 38% just in the first quarter of 2012 over all of last year. None of the solutions proposed by anti-gun people in congress would work either. Banning “assault” weapons, limiting ammunition purchases or limiting clip sizes would not have stopped any of these horrific, tragic shootings. It’s interesting how these shootings are covered non-stop in the media but instances of people’s lives being saved by someone in possession of a legal firearm are routinely ignored. By the way, assault weapons are not machine guns. They are semiautomatic. You still have to pull the trigger once for each round fired just like any other firearm. Machine guns are fully automatic and are illegal for the general public. Thanks again for your post.

    • Wow! I didn’t realize Chicago had done that! Thank you for bringing that to light. How stupid, imo. Obviously, I do believe in the right to own and use and I’ll never change my mind on that one. May be time to stock up, depending on current government stances. Kind of scary to think of a world where you can not protect your own. Hell, even cavemen protected what was theirs. Thanks for the comment!

  5. Brenda! I absolutely agree you! We must protect our family, so I have baseball bats in my bedroom, too! This is a shame we have to think about it, but we have to, otherwise the worst could accidentaly happen…

    • Wow, really? I thought I was the only fruity tooty with baseball bats! :) It really is a shame but you know, I’d rather be safe than sorry. Too many people have been sorry due to “lack of” thinking it all out! Thank you for stopping by!

  6. Hi Brenda,

It’s not allowed here to carry weapons without a special permission (Except for toys ;) ), but underworld thugs got ‘em. Fortunately I haven’t witness any shooting scenario though we had 3 decades of war here. Due to strict rules, guns allowed only for hunting with special licenses and yet we hate hunting and hunters too.

So, I don’t know how to use and not willing to have one either. Anyway I don’t know what I’ll do to protect what is mine when such a situation occurs. But I know that I won’t run away, ’cause I have hidden evil in me too ;)

    Cheers…

    • Interesting Mayura. I’d hate to see 30 years of war happening right in my own “neck of the woods”. How horrible. Thugs are everywhere ya know, and they’ll find ways to get more guns. These ppl here that are buying guns and shooting ppl are normal looking ppl with no record of violence. It’s truly sad.

However, I do believe in protecting my own and if that means owning and using a gun, when necessary, I am prepared. :)

  7. I’m inclined to agree with you because the bad people are always going to get their hands on guns, no matter how illegal it becomes. We might as well be equally armed so we can protect ourselves!

  8. Good post & point there, Brenda.
I know not much from the US Constitution and what I know, there’s the right to bear arms. Some say, that was added in there and meant for ‘well organised militia…’. Those were different times.
By law, deadly weapons are forbidden in The Netherlands, Firearms can be owned under very strict rules and laws.
In the whole discussion about this some people tend to forget that it’s about the right ‘to bear arms’, it’s not about firearms alone, as I understand.
So…what is a weapon. Something intended or designed to kill someone with? So a box cutter is not a weapon? You know what I mean…
I believe it’s anyone’s universal right to defend what’s his or hers, If someone invaded MY house I feel I have the right to do all I can, to protect my property end especially my loved ones.
If the law say otherwise, the law is wrong. Just the way I see it.
A weapon (any weapon) in ‘the wrong hands’ is never a good thing, but try to define ‘wrong hands’… See, the discussion never ends.
I know, that it’s a fact that outlawing weapons (guns) does not mean that the use of them goes to zero. A gun does not kill, people do. Just my 2 cents worth, from the other side of the pond… excellent post!

    • You hit the nail right on the head Jan and thank you for your response. There are those who would disagree with me on this. They don’t believe in taking a life, however, if someone breaks in my home and is armed, their intent is to KILL. I can’t just stand there and let it happen. I feel sorry for those who wouldn’t defend themselves, because in reality, praying to his or her Gods or Goddesses in this urgent situation, isn’t going to save ya. ;)

      Thanks Jan!

Woof at us ;) !
